Dr. Frank Shuman
Dr. Frank Shuman IV grew up in a small town on the Louisiana Texas border called Orange. He gained experience with animals working at the local mixed animal veterinary practice that served the close-knit community.
After high school, he earned an undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Texas. During his time in Austin, he was able to visit and enjoy the active lifestyle and entertainment that Central Texas has to offer. These great experiences stuck with him and created a goal in mind to establish deep roots in the area one day.
Dr. Shuman was accepted and completed a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. Frank’s first position upon graduation was with the Houston SPCA where he quickly ascended to Medical Director. This position afforded him the opportunity to work with companion animals, farm animals, wildlife, and occasionally with large exotic cats. The shelters high case load allowed Dr. Shuman to gain advanced experience with soft tissue and orthopedic surgery and become proficient with managing critical cases. Frank can be seen treating animals that have been severely neglected and abused on Animal Cops Houston which airs on Animal Planet.
In 2013, Dr. Shuman became an adjunct professor for Texas A&M University where he initiated and managed the Shelter Medicine and Animal Welfare rotation for 4th year veterinary students.
Dr. Shuman has a keen interest in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. He attends as many conferences and wet labs as possible to provide the more options and treatments for ailing pets. He also enjoys treating non-traditional pets. He works closely with the Austin Zoo to provide specialized care for zoo’s exotic collection. When you go to the zoo you may catch a glimpse of Dr. Shuman on his rounds.
Frank currently resides Southwest Austin and enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, and their dogs Tucker and Jack. Soccer is still one of his passions as well as the many other outdoor activities Austin has to offer.
